POLICE FORCE, CANU DESTROY BILLIONS OF DOLLARS WORTH OF NARCOTICS

The Guyana Police Force earlier this morning (Saturday) destroyed 2,253.60 kg of marijuana with a street value of approximately $2,028,240,000 (Guyana dollars).

The narcotics destruction exercise occurred at the former Ministry of Housing tarmac, Homestretch Avenue.

The period of the drug seizures is from January 2023 to date, and most of the seizures mainly occurred in Police Regional Divisions # 5 and #6 along with minor seizures in Regions #4 and #10.

Several person were charged and placed before the court, while several plantations were found abandoned.

The Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) also destroyed 512 KG, equivalent to $153 million (Guyana dollars).

Present at this morning’s proceedings were Minister of Home Affairs, Honourable Robeson Benn, Mr. Troy Whittaker, the Officer-In-Charge of Police Narcotics, and Mr. James Singh, Director of CANU along with other members of the Guyana Police Force and CANU.

The inaugural quarterly meeting of the Guyana Drug Information Network (GUYDIN) took place in 2024. The event was attended by the Deputy Director of CANU, Mr. Rayon Samuels, as well as delegates from multiple ministries, government agencies, and non-governmental groups. The meeting centred on examining the data provided to the GUYDIN regarding the operations of the demand and supply sectors in 2022 and 2023. It also addressed the latest trends in drug use, challenges faced by different sectors, and strategies for enhancing collaboration and information sharing.The primary objective of the gathering was to foster networking opportunities to strengthen Guyana's collaborative efforts in addressing drug-related issues.

The Annual Police Officers' Conference 2024 was officially inaugurated in the Police Officers' Mess Annexe in Eve Leary. This year's conference is being held under the theme "Transformative Unity: Nurturing Trust, Youth Development, Professionalism, and Safety through Competence and Strategic Partnership". The feature address, was delivered by His Excellency, Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, the President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana. In attendance were Mr. James Singh, the Director of the Customs Anti Narcotic Unit, and Mr. Andre Ally, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, among other esteemed dignitaries.
